Walking in

Twenty-two of them, some carried for years.

Not a mood and not a summary. Twenty-two separate sentences, said out loud and numbered one at a time. One of them is below, and it is one about the work. The rest were said in confidence and they stay in the room.

22problems he named out loud, most of them years old

  • I rarely comment on things I know. I don't speak up on topics that I know I know.

Two notes, one wall

Number twenty-one, andwhat was pinned beside it.

21. I don't know if I would be wasting time by going through mit or wharton or if i should be focused on my business and that weighs on my mind

got a scholarship with wharton for distressed debt (8 weeks)mit for global real estate leadership (2 years)professional full ride

Nobody had to find him anything. Both notes were on the wall at the same time, in the same handwriting, and the work was getting him to read his own board.

The other wall

Twenty-seven sentences,four doing double work.

Written in the present tense, the way every board on this site ends. Four of the twenty-seven carry a multiplier in his own hand: his note that the line beside it closes two or three of the old problems at once. Four examples below, one of them a multiplier.

27declarations in the present tense, 4 of them closing more than one problem

  • I am focusing on one project at a time.

Closes 2 of the twenty-two on its own.

  • I have extensive knowledge and I should be compensated as such.

  • I am confident with speaking, presenting and writing in public.

  • I have agreements in writing, and involve a neutral third party.

The one that got the most

One problem.Five answers to it.

The five separate lines that came out of the room to make sure it could not happen a third time.

Twice before, he had been pushed out of something he built from scratch. Five of the twenty-seven lines are the answer to it, and not one of them is be more careful.

  • I protect myself by hiring the right professionals to ensure that I am legally taken care of.

  • I have agreements in writing, and involve a neutral third party.

  • I have the right professionals to put together contracts that I don't need to get emotionally involved in.

  • It is clear what the responsibility split is, and everyone owns their share.

  • I am receiving the financial incentives that I am entitled to from my work, as well as joint ventures.

A thing that was done to him twice came out of the room as a set of structures: contracts, a written split, a neutral third party. Which is what turns a bad experience into a process.

Inside the room

Not a mock-up.His actual board.

The last thirty-five seconds of the second day. The twenty-seven are on the wall in front of him, blurred here because the sentences are his.

Day 2 · DecideTrajah at the end of the second day, with the twenty-seven on the board beside him.

In his words

Five things offthe two walls.

The quoted line under each of these is his, exactly as he wrote it on the second board.

  • 01

The credential was already on the wall.

He wrote down that he did not know whether Wharton or MIT would be a waste of his time. On the same board, in his own handwriting: a professional full ride to both. Eight weeks of distressed debt at Wharton, two years of global real estate leadership at MIT.

I am excited that I got a full ride to Wharton and MIT.

  • 02

A bad experience became a process.

Contracts he does not have to be emotional about, a written responsibility split, a neutral third party, and the incentives named up front, instead of a resolution to be more careful next time.

I have agreements in writing, and involve a neutral third party.

  • 03

One line closed two of the twenty-two.

The distressed deal and the real estate deal at the same time, focus split, nothing finished. And the multiplier beside this line is his own mark that it answers both.

I am focusing on one project at a time.

  • 04

He sent two people before anyone asked him to.

Which is the only referral figure worth anything: nobody prompted it, and there was nothing in it for him.

She listens closely, asks the right questions, and makes you comfortable enough to be honest about what is really holding you back. I have already recommended two people.

Walking in

Twenty-two problems he had been carrying, some of them for years, and events earlier in his career that had never been looked at directly, quietly setting the ceiling on what he would attempt next. Including a full ride to two of the best schools in the world that he was still arguing with himself about.

Walking out

Twenty-two problems named out loud and worked in the room, and twenty-seven sentences in the present tense in their place, several of them answering two or three of the old ones at once. He describes taking a hard look at those events, beginning to let them go, and walking out rejuvenated. Still a work in progress, in his words, and he sent two people to Aneta before anyone asked him to.

Your own three days

Some of what you need is already on your wall.

Three Sprints most months, and every one starts with a call so I can tell you straight whether three days would move what you are carrying, including when the answer is no.
